Conversation

Ideas grow stronger through conversation.

Formed on Purpose is not only a collection of essays or frameworks.
It is an ongoing exploration of how people live intentionally formed lives in a world constantly shaping them.

Thoughtful conversation plays an important role in that work.

This page exists for those who want to engage more directly — through discussion, questions, collaboration, or shared reflection.

Why conversation matters

The most important ideas rarely develop in isolation. They sharpen through dialogue, disagreement, and shared experience.

Many of the concepts behind the SHAPE and STEADY frameworks have grown through conversations with leaders, parents, friends, mentors, and people navigating responsibility in very different contexts.

This project is still evolving. Thoughtful dialogue helps shape its future.

Ways to engage

There are several ways to participate in the conversation.

1 — Follow the Essays

Most ongoing discussion happens around new essays published on Substack.

2 — Share Your Perspective

If an idea resonates with you — or challenges you — thoughtful feedback is always welcome. Many of the most helpful conversations begin with simple questions or observations.

3 — Professional Dialogue

Leaders, operators, and founders engage to discuss how formation principles apply within their organizations.

These conversations often explore:

• leadership alignment
• cultural drift
• decision-making under pressure
• organizational clarity

Some of these conversations eventually develop into advisory or program work. Many remain simply valuable exchanges.

4 — Family Formation Conversations

Parents face challenges that are difficult to navigate alone. Conversations around family formation involve:

• discipline and tone
• authority and stability
• communication between parents and children
• maintaining standards under stress

These discussions often inform the development of the STEADY framework and related programs.

Questions I’m exploring

Many of the essays, frameworks, and programs began as questions.

Some become essays.
Some evolve into frameworks.
Some remain open and continue to shape the work.

These are a few of the questions currently being explored.

How do people remain calm and disciplined under pressure?

-In moments of stress, many capable people become reactive.
-What structures help leaders and parents maintain composure when pressure rises?

What is the relationship between standards and culture?

-Organizations often talk about culture, but culture without clearly defined standards can become vague or personality-driven.
-What structures ensure culture is expressed through repeatable behavior?

Why do capable families drift into instability?

-Many families with strong values still experience reactivity, confusion, or distance over time.
-What elements create stability across changing seasons of family life?

What does disciplined authority look like in modern families?

-Authority is often misunderstood as either control or absence.
-How can parents lead with clarity and consistency while preserving dignity and connection?

Why do intelligent organizations struggle to execute consistently?

-Strategy may be clear, but execution often drifts as pressure rises and priorities shift.
-What formation structures ensure behavior remains aligned with strategy?

How do adults model the character they hope to form in others?

-The unit of change in both families and organizations is not the system. It is the adult.
-What disciplines allow adults to embody the standards they expect from others?
